South Sudan rival forces attend workshop in Juba

South Sudan army (SPLA) factions including those loyal to President Salva Kiir and first vice-president, Riek Machar, attended a workshop in Juba on Thursday on how to provide security to the capital, Juba, where the General headquarters of the two co-national armies are based.

The SPLA loyal to President Kiir and SPLA In-Opposition of the first vice-president Machar form the military and police units that will be providing security for Juba for 30 months during the transitional government of national unity. The workshop was facilitated by peace monitors and members of the international community.

South Sudan Cease-fire Panel Accuses President’s Forces of Violations

Two weeks after the former warring parties in South Sudan’s conflict formed the Transitional Government of National Unity, cease-fire monitors say President Salva Kiir’s forces are still not cooperating with security monitors in implementing security arrangements, as set forth in the peace agreement.

Major General Molla Hailemariam, who chairs the Ceasefire Transitional and Security Arrangements Monitoring Mechanism (CTSAMM), said Thursday that monitors still face resistance from government forces.
