Today is #WorldFoodDay which commemorates the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. On this day, we reflect on how the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated the scourges of food insecurity, malnourishment, and unsustainable food production.

The FAO is trying to address this problem by advocating for a sustainable food agri-system. This is one where a variety of safe and nutritious foods are available at an affordable price to everyone globally and no one suffers from malnutrition or goes hungry. At the same time, less food is wasted and the food supply chain is more resilient to shocks including extreme weather and pandemics.

“Sustainable agri-food systems deliver food security and nutrition for all, without compromising the economic, social and environmental bases, for generations to come. They lead to better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life for all.”
