International Day for the Right to the Truth

On 24 March, the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed. The day sheds light on the right to truth for the family members of those who have been victimised and subject to gross human rights violations. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, put it thus: “The truth is an empowering and healing force.  We embrace it for the past, the present and the future.” The day also pays tribute to Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero, a human rights activist from El Salvador who was murdered on 24 March 1980.
